Mastering Date-Time Based Analysis in DAX
Dan Clark
A large volume of analysis that a business typically performs on its data involves dates and/or times. For example, you may need to compare sales from one year to the next or aggregate transactions over time. DAX incorporates many built in time intelligence functions to help make date-time based calculations easier. Although the time intelligence functions are very beneficial, they can be misused and give erroneous results. To avoid this, it is imperative that you understand what functions to use and how to use them.
This webinar is designed to guide you through the various time intelligence functions available in DAX and provide practical examples of how to use them. We will also cover time intelligence best practices and how to avoid the many “gotchas” that can occur by misusing these functions.

Building Your First Tabular Model
Dan Clark
With the release of SSAS 2012 Microsoft has introduced a new BI storage engine. In addition to the traditional OLAP engine you now have the option to build your BI models on top of the new Vertipaq engine (This is the same engine used by PowerPivot.) To use the new Vertipaq engine you build a Tabular data model. A new query language DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) is used to query the data, create calculations, measures, and KPI’s. DAX is similar to the expression language used in excel and it should be easier to use than MDX and appeal to a broader audience.
This webinar is designed to introduce you to the process of building a tabular model in SQL Server Data Tools (BIDS rebranded). We will import data from a SQL Server relational database into a tabular model project and create relationships between the tables. We will use DAX to create and manage calculations, measures, and Key Performance Indicators. We will then test and explore the model using the Analyze in Excel feature in SQL Server Data Tools.

Performance Tuning with Column Store Indexes
Eric Hanson
SQL Server columnstore indexes and the vector-based batch mode of query execution are new in the SQL Server 2012 release, and can speed up data warehouse queries by 100X or more. In their sweet spot, columnstores give jaw-dropping performance, but there are limitations in the initial release where performance may not improve as much as the technology allows, unless you tune your application. This talk presents how to work around the main limitations in the columnstore feature to get consistently great performance. We’ll address how to compensate for query performance limitations for outer joins and union operations, data type restrictions, and the fact that columnstore indexes make the data read-only (except for the ability to switch in partitions). We’ll also discuss how to capitalize on the new segment elimination feature that can skip million-row chunks of a table with a constant-time check.

Super-size Your SSIS Breakfast Sandwich: Performance Tuning 2012 SSIS Data Loads
Hope Foley
Importing data is as common to SQL Server as bacon is to a savory breakfast sandwich. As most of us love to eat those breakfast sandwiches, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) loves to eat data in an Import/Export kind of way. Although a green chain of boxes in SSIS can be the ruling “Happy Dance” of any DBA or SQL Developer, we must all still consider the performance of those tasks. In this session, we will go through performance tuning in SSIS 2012 after a successful SSIS package has been developed. When we are finished with this session, not only will you still have the mystic of green colors of successful execution of your SSIS import and export tasks, but the turbo boosters will be turned on as well.

Master Data Services in SQL Server 2012
Arie Jones
Most DBAs at one time or another have been taught the importance of master data management(MDM), which is comprised of a set of processes and tools in order to keep your non-transactional data in a consistent state. However, with today’s fast paced environment and tightening budgets most DBAs lack the resources to properly implement it. With the upcoming release of SQL Server 2012, Microsoft has taken their second swipe at providing a tool known as Master Data Services(MDS) to aid the DBA in this endeavor. In this session, you will learn the how Master Data Services is implemented in SQL Server 2012, setting up models, working through the Excel plug-in, and utilizing DQS and business rules to help with that dirty data. This session will definitely be an eye opener for some that were on the fence with the first release and those that are coming into the platform with a fresh set of eyes!

Beginning Development for Business – Part 1: Getting Your Feet Wet
Mark Brown
This is the first part of a new series that focuses on teaching people how to become a software developer, concentrating on business driven software development. This series will be geared toward the new developer or someone who knows how to program but wants to learn how to develop for a company. In this first part, we will begin by looking at what software development is and how developing software for a business is different than developing a product that any number of people will use inside and outside of a company. We will look at what is required of a developer, give some examples of what to expect in a developers average day on the job, and begin by introducing and planning out the application that will be developed and evolved throughout the series.

Introduction to ETL Using SSIS
Bradley Schacht
As we all know data is not static. It is constantly changing, constantly moving and just moving data from one place to another is a simple enough task. In this session Brad will explore how to use SSIS to connect to a variety of different data sources and destinations such as Excel, SQL Server, Oracle and Flat Files. He will then discuss some of the DOs and DON’Ts of the SSIS ETL world. We will discuss ways to use SSIS to do a simple data dump, keep tables in sync, do incremental loads, deal with very large data sets that you may not be able to handle all in memory, and bring multiple sources into one destination. Other topics to be covered include the types of transforms (partially blocking vs fully blocking), which transforms are right for which jobs and which transforms to avoid if you want your data to get moved quickly and efficiently.

Indexing your Data Warehouse
Troy Gallant
One of the primary skillsets most database professionals are initially required to “master” is the art of proper indexing in our databases. We learn early on that an effective indexing configuration will go further in making our databases perform efficiently than probably any other single tuning technique. What’s not so commonly discussed though are the varying approaches one may wish to utilize when indexing your SQL Server enterprise data warehouse. Some scenarios warrant a very similar approach, while others require adaptation to an entirely new paradigm. This webinar will attempt to flush out some of these differences, and hopefully cause you to take a good look at your current indexing to see if indeed it could be operating even more efficiently.

SSIS Variables and Expression
Bradley Schacht
Building a dynamic SSIS package can be a daunting task. There are countless locations where expressions and variables can be used throughout SSIS. In this session Brad will walk you through the basics of variables including how SSIS deals with variable scoping. We will then take a look the unique expression language used in SSIS and how that can help in situations such as dynamic file names, connection strings and data cleansing. Next we will bring it all together and show how powerful SSIS can truly be by combing the functionality of variables and expressions. Topics will include user variables, system variables, the expression language, as well as where to use expressions and variables in the control flow, data flow and even event handlers to build a useful custom auditing solution.

Upgrading DTS Packages to SSIS
Brian Knight
The Microsoft “End of Life” policy for SQL 2000 has encouraged many organizations to seriously look at migrating their SQL2000 servers to SQL2005 or 2008. One of the biggest obstacles to a rapid migration is the DTS package issue. To gain the performance benefits and a supported path forward for the functionality in DTS, these packages should be converted into native SSIS. As we all know, the conversion is NOT straightforward. SSIS is more powerful and significantly different from DTS. Join us as SQL Server and author, Brian Knight, shares his knowledge.
