Transitioning from SSIS to Azure Data Factory

Written by Pragmatic Works | Nov 27, 2019

Do you want to learn the process of transitioning from SSIS to Azure Data Factory (ADF)? In a recent webinar, Samuel Owusu teaches the differences and similarities between SSIS and ADF and how to run, schedule and monitor SSIS packages in ADF.

The presentation begins with a comparison of the two:

  • SSIS – basically a data migration and ETL tool that has existed as a component of SQL Server since the SQL Server 2005 edition. Microsoft Integration Services (SSIS) is a platform for building enterprise level data integration and data transformation solutions.
  • Azure Data Factory - a data orchestration tool. It is a cloud-based integration service that allows you to create data driven workflows in the cloud for orchestrating and automating data movement and transformation. This Platform as a Service offering in Azure was released in 2015.

The webinar will take a look inside of an SSIS package and an Azure Data Factory solution and then delves into the similarities and differences between these two tools. Samuel will compare things like dependencies, orchestration and pricing.

He’ll also discuss ADF strengths and some gaps it has compared to SSIS. The remainder of the webinar is spent on a demo of getting started with ADF and how to run, schedule and monitor SSIS packages in Azure Data Factory.
