How to Become an SSAS Cube Developer

The role of a Cube Developer is to build tabular and MOLAP cubes that allow users to report using Excel or other reporting tools. Some companies merge this role with the generic BI Developer role. The Cube Developer should have MDX and DAX querying skills to build easy calculations for the report writers.

BI Developer US Average Salary

STEP-BY-STEP PLAN FOR SSAS MASTERY

The Learning Path includes classes offered as part of your On-Demand Learning package. You can also choose some of the optional certification tests from Microsoft.  Because you’re so close to achieving your MCSA: BI Reporting with only two tests, we added the Excel classes needed to give you the information for the certification (two tests).

Classes to Take

Pragmatic Works’ On-Demand Learning classes are constantly being updated and re-recorded to make sure you have the latest info about SSIS, SSRS and SSAS. T-SQL is the core skill included since it’s the foundation of most BI development. Here’s a list of classes we recommend taking in the proper order:

Recommended Books

There are three books that focus on the hardest part of SSAS: modeling, DAX and MDX. These topics don’t change frequently and viewing a book for a slightly older version of SQL Server is perfect to get your bearings.

MCSA: BI Development Certification

One way of demonstrating proficiency in your learning journey is with achieving your MCSA: BI Development. Earning an MCSA: BI Development demonstrates knowledge relevant to ETL, data analysis, and modeling solutions.  It is the first step on your path to becoming a Data Management and Analytics Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE).
