Microsoft Fabric Trial License Expiring: What You Need to Know

Microsoft Fabric Trial License Expiring: What You Need to Know

In this video, Manuel Quintana from Pragmatic Works discusses the expiration of the Microsoft Fabric Trial License and what users need to know to avoid losing important data and workspaces. As the Fabric trial period nears its end, users should be aware of the steps they need to take to preserve their workspaces and data. Let’s dive into the key points.

Key Things to Know About the Microsoft Fabric Trial Expiration

  • Each organizational tenant allows up to five users to activate the trial. However, if a colleague didn’t have access to a trial, their workspace could be assigned to your trial capacity.
  • Once the trial ends, non-Power BI items, such as dataflows and pipelines, will be permanently deleted after seven days unless transferred to a paid capacity.

How to Transfer Workspaces from a Trial to a Paid Capacity

If you want to retain your workspaces after the trial period, follow these steps:

  1. Log into Power BI and access the Admin Portal by clicking on the gear icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Capacity Settings and find the trial capacity details. This will show which workspaces are using the trial capacity.
  3. Go to each workspace you want to preserve and navigate to the Workspace Settings.
  4. Under License Type, switch from the trial capacity to either a Fabric Capacity or a Premium Capacity to avoid data loss.

What If You Don’t Have a Fabric or Premium Capacity?

If your organization does not have a Fabric or Premium Capacity, you can consider provisioning an F2 On-Demand Fabric Capacity through the Azure portal. This option allows you to pause and start your capacity, enabling pay-as-you-go flexibility. It’s a cost-effective way to preserve your work without losing your workspaces and data but be mindful of the costs associated with keeping the capacity running.

Final Thoughts

As your trial nears expiration, it’s crucial to begin transferring workspaces to avoid losing valuable content. Whether you move workspaces to a paid capacity or provision an F2 capacity, make sure you act before the trial ends to avoid permanent data loss.
