How to use the Narrative Visual with Copilot in Power BI - AI Visuals in Power BI

How to use the Narrative Visual with Copilot in Power BI - AI Visuals in Power BI

Power BI's Smart Narrative visual is a powerful tool that enables you to quickly create summaries in your reports, highlighting hidden trends and relevant insights. In this tutorial, Angelica Choo Quan demonstrates how to use the Smart Narrative visual, both with and without Copilot, to enhance your Power BI reports.

Understanding the Smart Narrative Visual

The Smart Narrative visual in Power BI is designed to help users create text summaries that interpret and explain the data presented in their reports. This visual can automatically generate insights based on the visuals in your report, making it easier to communicate key points to your audience. Here’s how you can start using it:

  • Right-click any visual in your report and select Summarize to generate a narrative for that specific visual.
  • Alternatively, insert the Smart Narrative visual from the Visualizations pane or the Insert tab to create a summary for the entire report page.

Using the Smart Narrative Visual with Copilot

If you have access to Copilot in Power BI, you can leverage this AI-powered tool to enhance the capabilities of the Smart Narrative visual. Here’s how:

  • After inserting the Smart Narrative visual, select the Copilot preview option to allow Copilot to help generate the summary.
  • Copilot provides suggestions, such as creating an executive summary or generating a bulleted list of insights.
  • When you select a suggestion, Copilot uses the visuals on the current report page to craft a narrative, focusing on key insights.

Customizing Your Narrative

Once the narrative is generated, you can customize it to better suit your needs:

  • Edit the text: You can modify the generated summary to ensure it aligns with your report's message.
  • Format the text: Use the formatting options to adjust fonts, colors, and other text properties to enhance readability.
  • Use footnotes: Copilot-generated narratives often include footnotes that reference specific visuals. These footnotes can be clicked to see which visual they pertain to, adding clarity to your report.

Requirements for Using Copilot with Smart Narrative

To use Copilot with the Smart Narrative visual, your Power BI workspace must meet specific requirements:

  • You need a paid dedicated capacity for your workspace, such as a Premium or F64 or higher license.
  • Copilot must be enabled in Microsoft Fabric, and your workspace needs to be in one of the supported regions listed in the Fabric region availability.

Even without Copilot, the Smart Narrative visual is a built-in AI feature in Power BI that allows you to generate summaries effortlessly. However, with Copilot, you can enhance those summaries with AI-driven insights and customization options.
